Caring for The Needs of Pigs

Nestled in the gentle rolling hills above Solvang, California covering five acres is Lil Orphan Hammies a pot bellied pig sanctuary and rescue center.  Founded in 1992 this 501(c)(3) rescue is operated by Sue Parkinson; LOH is responsible for more than one hundred pigs.

The pigs are lovingly cared for by Suey, as she is affectionately called, and her staff of volunteers.  All the pigs needs are met by providing shelter, food, water and medical care. Lil Orphan Hammies has a strict “no kill” policy.  All of these former pets are allowed to live out their lives in a caring environment.

At feeding time, some of the more aggressive eaters are fed in a special feed station which allows the older and slower pigs to take thier time at eating.

Full grown farm hog, full grown potbellied pig and potbellied pig piglet. Some people think potbellied pigs are big, but not really if you compare them to the size of a farm hog.

Suey loves each and every pig. Even with over a hundred pigs on her property, each one has a name and she knows each one by name. She knows how to communicate with them, a "pig whisperer," you could say.

Lil Orphan Hammies has become the permanent and final home for potbellied pigs who are not adoptable due to age or health reasons.
